Russian farmers are waiting for a record grain harvest

Russian farmers can harvest a record grain harvest this year, said the head of the Ministry of Agriculture Alexander Tkachev.

“If favorable weather conditions persist, the grain harvest may increase from 113 to 116 million tons.

We have already exceeded half and we hope that this will be a record in the whole new history, ”Tkachev said at a meeting dedicated to seasonal agricultural work, which Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev is holding in Astrakhan via videoconference.

The minister recalled that 116 million tons were harvested in 1990, but over 26 years the sown area occupied by grain has decreased by 20%, more than 13 million hectares have been disposed of.

Then, according to Tkachev, the yield was 12-15 centners per hectare, and today - 24 centners. The record was, according to him, 1978, when 127 million tons of grain were harvested in the Russian Federation with a yield of 17 centners per hectare.

“We calculated that additional income from export, if we sell 60 million tons for export, will amount to $ 11 billion,” Tkachev said.

“In 2016-17, we plan to export up to 40 million tons of grain, including up to 30 million tons of wheat,” he added.

By 2030, Russia can harvest 170 million tons of grain, said the head of the Ministry of Agriculture Alexander Tkachev.

Tkachev noted that earlier the agricultural support system was focused on the southern, more fertile regions.

“We are overturning this support system. I am sure that if we follow this path, plus we will pay them extra for fertilizers, plus for the introduction of new lands, then I assure you that if this work is carried out by 2030, we can get no less than 170 million tons of grain ”, - said Tkachev.

He recalled that China produces 507 million tons, the United States - 428 million tons.

Earlier, the Russian government decided to zero the export duty on wheat. This was stated at a meeting in Astrakhan by Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev.

“We have decided to zero the export duty on wheat for the next two years. As a result, the grain market will receive an additional impetus for development, ”Medvedev said.

The head of the Ministry of Agriculture Alexander Tkachev noted that this decision "will give exporters more certainty, they will be able to conclude long-term contracts for the supply of grain without worrying about fluctuations in the exchange rate."

Over the past seven years, according to him, Russian grain exports have expanded their geography from 60 to 100 countries.

“In order to avoid a sharp drop in prices, given the high harvest, grain is already being purchased for the intervention fund. We started from Crimea, by September we will come to the central part of Russia, by the end of the agricultural year we plan to purchase up to 2 million tons for our fund, ”Tkachev said.

The minister added that the purchases are carried out at the maximum minimum purchase prices for grain, which the Ministry of Agriculture approved in March.

Tkachev recalled that the Second World Grain Forum will be held in Sochi on November 18-19.

“Russia will once again become the world arena for working out proposals for the further development of the grain industry and ensuring global food security,” he said.
